Understanding Time and a Half Pay
Time and a half is the most common premium pay rate. It is calculated as 150% of your base hourly wage. While primarily used for mandatory overtime (hours over 40 per week), many industries also use it for holiday pay on days like Thanksgiving or New Year's Day.
The 1.5x Formula
Base Hourly Rate$Hourly
× 1.5 Multiplier= 1.5x Rate
1.5x Rate × OT Hours= Total OT Pay
FLSA Rules for Overtime
Under US Federal law, if you are a "non-exempt" employee, your employer is legally required to pay you time and a half for any hours worked beyond 40 in a single 7-day workweek. Some states, like California, also require 1.5x pay for any hours worked over 8 in a single workday.
